Affectiva, a subsidiary of Smart Eye since its acquisition in June 2021, is headquartered in the US. Founded in 2009 and employing approximately 60 individuals, the company functions as a provider of embedded software products, specifically focusing on emotion-detection software. Affectiva originated as an MIT Media Lab spin-off.
On August 14, 2026, Affectiva co-founder Rana el Kaliouby, an Egyptian-American computer scientist, was profiled as a pioneer in emotional AI, with her upbringing in Cairo and early exposure to computing from her parents highlighted as foundational influences. Previously, on May 25, the company detailed how its Emotion AI identifies customer struggle during product onboarding or setup, a challenge it refers to as the "Unboxing Paradox." This followed iMotions' announcement on May 21 that it had made the Affectiva Emotion SDK available on Android, integrating advanced facial expression and emotion recognition capabilities directly onto the widely used mobile operating system for on-device, privacy-first emotion AI at the edge.
