Albany State University, a state-owned institution headquartered in Albany, Georgia, was founded in 1903 and operates with approximately 1,150 employees. The university specializes in higher education, functioning as a public historically black university. In 2017, it consolidated with Darton State College to become a single entity under the University System of Georgia (USG). Albany State University maintains two campuses within Albany—the East and West Campuses—and a satellite campus, the Cordele Center, in Cordele.
