The American Athletic Conference (The American), a privately owned NCAA member, was reorganized in 2013 and maintains its headquarters in Irving, Texas. Employing approximately 70 people as of 2023, its primary activity is the organization and operation of spectator sports. The conference's membership includes UAB, Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, Navy (football only), North Texas, Rice, South Florida, SMU, Temple, UTSA, Tulane, Tulsa, and Wichita State (basketball and Olympic sports). The conference's origins trace back to 1979, though its current structure is a result of the 2013 reconstitution.
