On February 11, 2026, the Glen Nelson Center at American Public Media Group launched the fifth annual 2026 Next Challenge for Media & Journalism, a national startup competition designed to support ideas aimed at reinventing local journalism. Announced at the 2026 Knight Media Forum in Miami, the challenge offers $250,000 in awards for both nonprofit and for-profit startups building tools, models, and voices for the future of local journalism. Previously, on January 16, 2026, American Public Media distributed a new national broadcast special from the State University of New York at Stony Brook’s Collaborative for the Earth (C4E), focusing on nuclear energy and bringing C4E's climate conversations to audiences across the country. Earlier, on December 20, 2025, American Public Media Group, which owns Minnesota Public Radio and Southern California Public Radio, agreed to pay an $86,400 penalty after entering into a Consent Decree with the FCC for airing Emergency Alert System (EAS) tones during a BBC World Service segment distributed by APMG.
