BBFC, also known as the British Board of Film Classification, is a state-owned entity headquartered in the UK. Founded in 1912, with approximately 50 employees, the agency is responsible for age ratings on films and other video content within the UK.
On April 27, 2026, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) launched its largest Youth Panel to date, expanding its total to 44 members aged 7 to 21. This third round of recruitment introduced two new strands, BBFC Kids and BBFC Teens, alongside the existing BBFC Young Adults panel, with members selected from all four UK nations to ensure diverse perspectives in film classification. Earlier, on April 17, the BBFC confirmed its AI tool had assisted Compliance Officers in classifying HBO Max's content library ahead of its UK launch on March 26, 2026. This followed news from April 15, when the BBFC used its new AI tool to provide age ratings for the first time in the UK for TV shows such as *Game of Thrones* and *Euphoria*. The tool, developed by the BBFC, generates metadata to highlight specific compliance issues like violence, nudity, or language for human review. The BBFC initially confirmed the successful deployment of this first AI tool on April 14, to support Compliance Officers in classifying HBO Max's entire library following the streaming service's UK launch.
