The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), a state-owned non-profit organization founded in 1912 and headquartered in the UK, employs approximately 50 people. Its primary function is assigning age ratings to films and other video content in the United Kingdom. As of 2023, the BBFC continues to fulfill this role.
The BBFC published its 2024 Annual Report, noting a record number of cinema film submissions, driven largely by increased South Asian film submissions. The report also highlighted advancements in audience protection and age rating delivery across various platforms, including the use of AI in content classification. Mary Poppins was identified as the most complained-about cinema release of 2024. In other news, a Star Wars film, *The Phantom Menace*, received a PG rating for its cinema re-release due to a fight scene containing moderate violence. Finally, the BBFC, in partnership with Universal Pictures, launched a Create the Card Competition for children aged 4-11 to design a BBFC Black Card for the film *Wicked: For Good*, debuting in UK cinemas on November 21st.
