Bureau International des Expositions, a privately owned organization headquartered in France, was founded in 1928 and operates with approximately 20 employees. Functioning as an intergovernmental organization, it was created to supervise international exhibitions, also known as expos or world expos, that fall under the jurisdiction of the Convention Relating to International Exhibitions.
On September 29, 2026, five iconic objects from Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai found new homes, ensuring their legacy lives on after the Expo closed on October 13, 2025. The event celebrated innovation, culture, and global collaboration under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” Earlier in September, on September 23, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) released a Legacy Map, highlighting the continued reuse of ideas and innovations from Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, nearly one year after its conclusion. This Expo brought together 165 Official Participants and attracted over 29 million visitors. Previously, on September 16, representatives from 15 countries concluded a two-day multilateral session of the BIE’s Capacity Building Programme in Dakar, Senegal. This session, organised in partnership with the Government of Senegal, focused on the role of Expos in public diplomacy, economic development, and future shaping. On September 14, applications opened for the BIE-Cosmos Prize Expo 2027 Yokohama, inviting not-for-profit organisations and citizen projects globally to submit initiatives aligned with the Expo’s theme “Scenery of the Future for Happiness.” This followed the BIE’s September 10 announcement that it would organise the Capacity Building Programme session in Dakar on September 15–16.
