Corus Entertainment on July 17 pushed back against claims that Global News is shutting down local television production in Calgary and Edmonton following dozens of layoffs and a restructuring. The Toronto-based parent company stated that despite centralizing some technical production functions in Toronto, local newscasts in Calgary and Edmonton will continue to be produced with local anchors, producers, and newsgathering teams. Previously, on July 16, recent layoffs within Calgary's news media and production changes at Global Calgary sparked renewed concerns about the future of local journalism in Alberta, with observers warning that continued centralization could erode community coverage and drive audiences toward unverified online information. Earlier the same day, Corus announced it would end local production in Calgary and Edmonton, centralizing those cities’ newscasts at a separate production hub. These actions follow a reported decline in ad revenue forcing cuts at Corus and Global News.
