CityWest is planning a new transport fibre route for Highway 37 in northern B.C. to enhance network resiliency and reduce disruptions, following recent telecommunications outages in the region. Previously, on August 11, CityWest experienced a service outage affecting customers west of Prince George. The company identified the cause as a fibre cut due to attempted copper theft on a third-party carrier's network in Alberta, which carries CityWest’s long-distance traffic. This followed the company's expansion of its fibre network along the Highway 16 corridor between Prince George and Vanderhoof. On July 29, residents in Cluculz Lake were set to receive high-speed internet services as part of this initiative, a development highlighted by Minister of Citizens' Services Diana Gibson, who emphasized the importance of reliable internet.
