Clark Atlanta University (CAU) is a private, historically black research university located in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1865 as Atlanta University, it merged with Clark College (founded 1869) in 1988 to form the current institution. CAU holds the distinction of being the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the Southern United States. It is classified as an R2 Doctoral University, signifying high research activity, and currently employs approximately 1270 people.
