Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, also known as DCMS, is a state-owned entity headquartered in the UK, employing approximately 1750 individuals. Functioning primarily in government administration, the department is responsible for strategically important parts of the economy, encompassing sectors which make up 14% of GDP, 17% of trade, and 25% of UK businesses.
On March 12, 2026, Leamington Spa submitted a bid to become the UK’s first Town of Culture, an initiative branching from the UK City of Culture program, which launched in 2009 and has featured four previous winners, including Coventry in 2021. Previously, on February 23, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) announced its work on secondary legislation to implement the Media Act 2024, aiming to bring popular streaming services in the UK under the regulatory oversight of Ofcom. Earlier, on January 16, leaders of special schools called on the government not to exclude their sector from plans to create new libraries, following a September commitment from the Treasury to fund libraries in every primary school by the end of the current parliament with £10 million.
