Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, also known as DCMS, is a state-owned entity headquartered in the UK, employing approximately 1750 individuals. Functioning primarily in government administration, the department is responsible for strategically important parts of the economy, encompassing sectors which make up 14% of GDP, 17% of trade, and 25% of UK businesses.
On January 28, 2026, a report from the national charity Libraries Connected indicated that public libraries in West Berkshire deliver at least £12,221 in annual value by supporting mental health and wellbeing, primarily through providing volunteering opportunities, especially for older people. This followed calls on January 16, 2026, from leaders of special schools who urged the government not to exclude their sector from plans to establish new libraries. This appeal came after the Treasury committed in September to fund new libraries in every primary school by the end of the current parliament, backed by £10 million. Previously, on November 30, 2025, analysis showed that voluntary organisations secure fewer than 5% of government contracts, a proportion similar to three years prior. Government figures released the previous week stated that voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations were involved in 17,656 government contracts worth £24.4 billion over a five-year period.
