On April 30, 2026, the head of Deutsche Welle praised Jimmy Lai's commitment to press freedom. Lai, the founder of Apple Daily—a platform that enabled free reporting and became a voice for Hong Kong's democracy movement—was sentenced to 20 years in prison earlier this year, following his detention in 2020. Deutsche Welle has presented its Freedom of Speech Award to media figures and initiatives for their dedication to promoting free speech since 2015.
