On October 1, 2026, Manitoba’s labour board ruled that Dynacare medical lab staff are to be classified as essential workers in the event of a future strike or lockout, shifting the terrain of the ongoing collective bargaining battle. Previously, on September 25, some Dynacare clinics in Winnipeg, including those normally open on Saturdays, closed because staff refused to pick up overtime shifts after being forced back to work amid the labour dispute. This followed the Manitoba Labour Board hearing closing submissions on September 22 regarding the essential worker designation for Dynacare staff, a hearing that interrupted the strike hours after lab workers began picketing. During these proceedings, the province stated that halting services was "unethical," while the union warned against setting a bad precedent. Earlier on September 16, Manitoba's health minister, Asagwara, affirmed that the government expects the for-profit company to treat its workers fairly. The 350 private lab workers, represented by the Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals, have been without a contract since March 31 and commenced their strike in September. On the same day, the union argued during a labour board hearing that Dynacare’s strike contingency plans might violate workers' rights, with a labour relations officer noting Dynacare workers perform the same job as essential hospital lab staff.
