EWTN Global Catholic Network will provide comprehensive live coverage from September 23–26 for the beatification of Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, including live broadcasts of events, on-the-ground reporting, special programming, and expanded access to Sheen's historic television content. Previously, on September 15, EWTN announced it would supply clean live pool feeds and media resources from St. Louis, Missouri, for the Vespers (Evening Prayers) on September 22, making these available to domestic and international news organizations for the beatification. This followed EWTN marking its 45th anniversary on August 15, having grown from its first broadcast from a converted garage in Alabama to become the world's largest Catholic media network. Earlier that day, EWTN reported the death of Richard Payne on July 18 at age 88. Payne was familiar to EWTN audiences for many years through his films and series, including "Saints Alive!" and "A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing," with EWTN President Emeritus Doug Keck noting he would be missed for standing up for his beliefs. On August 15, 1981, Mother Angelica founded the Eternal Word Television Network, deliberately choosing the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the launch to place the enterprise under the Virgin Mary’s protection.
