Film Workshop, a Privately Owned company headquartered in Hong Kong, was founded in 1984 by director and producer Tsui Hark alongside his then-partner Nansun Shi. The company specializes in content rights, operating as an independent film production and distribution entity. It was established to provide an autonomous creative environment for filmmakers to pursue artistic innovation while maintaining commercial viability. Functioning as a pivotal driver during the "Golden Age" of Hong Kong cinema, the company initially formed a close production alliance with Cinema City before establishing a strategic partnership with Golden Harvest in the early 1990s. Film Workshop has built an internationally recognized portfolio of feature films across multiple genres, including Shanghai Blues, A Better Tomorrow, A Chinese Ghost Story, The Killer, The Taking of Tiger Mountain, and the Once Upon a Time in China and Swordsman franchises.
