Furman University is a privately owned liberal arts university located in Greenville, South Carolina. Founded in 1826 as a Baptist institution and named for Richard Furman, it is the oldest private university in South Carolina. While it transitioned to a secular institution in 1992, retaining its motto "Christo et Doctrinae" (For Christ and Learning), it currently employs approximately 1750 people and enrolls roughly 2,300 undergraduate and 150 graduate students on its 750-acre campus.
