On August 6, 2026, Houston Public Media named veteran broadcaster Tessa Barrera as the new co-host of its weekday talk show “Hello Houston,” where she will join longtime host Ernie Manouse starting August 17. Barrera brings 13 years of experience in television and radio to the multi-platform program, which features conversations with local newsmakers, community leaders, artists, and residents across the Greater Houston region. Previously, on July 2, the City of Houston's Office of Inspector General (OIG) declined to investigate Mayor John Whitmire's $60,000 payment to podcast producer Owen Conflenti, according to the Houston Progressive Caucus, which had filed a complaint. This followed City Controller Chris Hollins' announcement on June 15 of a "formal investigation" into a top financial advisor for Mayor Whitmire, after reports that the advisor rarely appeared at City Hall. Earlier, on June 10, Houston City Council approved Mayor Whitmire's proposed $7.5 billion budget for the fiscal year 2027 with a 15 to 1 vote, a budget Whitmire called an important step toward the city's financial stability. The budget plan had faced proposed amendments from City Council members on June 3, receiving support from labor groups and criticism from some community advocates.
