Illinois Public Media, a privately owned company founded in 1922, operates radio and television broadcasting services. As of 2023, it employs approximately 50 people and is headquartered in the United States.
On Wednesday, Illinois Public Media announced that two full-time employees were laid off, and three vacant positions would remain unfilled. This decision, communicated via email by Executive Director Moss Bresnahan, was attributed to federal funding cuts to public broadcasting, impacting the station's financial stability. The funding cuts, totaling $1.5 million, resulted from a Congressional vote on Friday, eliminating all federal support for public broadcasting. The House passed the $9 billion rescissions package early Friday morning following Senate passage Thursday evening. Separately, Illinois Public Media reported on a new state law requiring public colleges and universities to provide birth control and abortion medication.
