Illinois Public Media, a privately owned entity headquartered in the US, was founded in 1922 with approximately 50 employees. Its core operation involves radio and television broadcasting.
On April 2, 2026, Illinois Public Media partnered with the College of Media at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign to offer teen podcast workshops. Previously, on November 30, 2025, Tracy Sulkin, Dean of the College of Media, removed Moss Bresnahan as Executive Director of Illinois Public Media. This move was described as an effort to restructure IPM, which manages several NPR and PBS broadcast programs through the college. Earlier, on September 11, 2025, Illinois Public Media laid off two full-time employees and chose not to fill three vacant positions. This downsizing, announced by then-Executive Director Moss Bresnahan, was attributed to federal funding cuts to public broadcasting, aiming to ensure the station’s "long-term financial stability."
