The Independent Film Channel (IFC), a privately owned American basic cable channel, was founded in 1994 as a spin-off of Bravo. Initially a commercial-free network showcasing independent films, IFC shifted its programming strategy in the late 2000s, incorporating comedy, horror, and cult television and films. The channel transitioned to an ad-supported model in 2010 and dropped "Independent Film Channel" from its official name in 2014, though it retains the IFC abbreviation. Currently, AMC Networks owns the channel.
