The Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC), also known as Institut pour la citoyenneté canadienne, is a Canadian non-profit organization founded in 2005. Employing approximately 50 people, the ICC focuses on civic engagement and social organization. As of 2023, its activities center on programs and initiatives designed to foster inclusivity, facilitate community connections, and promote active participation in Canadian society.
The Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) published a survey on October 25, focusing on immigrant retention in Canada. The survey of approximately 5000 immigrants indicated that feelings of belonging and optimism are key factors influencing whether newcomers choose to stay. A similar report released on Tuesday also highlighted these factors, alongside concerns about housing affordability, as crucial for immigrant retention. Further research by the ICC, supported by the University of Toronto, identified optimism about the future and a sense of belonging as the most influential factors in immigrants' decisions to remain in Canada. Following a Council of the Federation meeting in Huntsville, CEO Daniel Bernhard criticized the Premiers' focus on increasing immigration levels based on economic needs, arguing against arbitrary immigration caps. On a separate occasion, Bernhard urged a reconsideration of Canada's approach to attracting global expertise, citing concerns about reduced immigration targets for 2025 (395,000), 2026 (380,000), and 2027 (365,000), warning of potential negative impacts on various sectors.
