Jackson Energy Authority (Florida), also known as JEA and Jacksonville Electric Authority, is a state-owned entity headquartered in the US. Established in 1959, and employing approximately 1,870 individuals, it functions as a not-for-profit, community-owned utility that serves over one million residents and businesses in Jacksonville, Florida, and surrounding counties in the northeastern part of the state. The entity is recognized as the eighth-largest municipal electric utility in the United States and the largest in Florida, providing electric, water, and sewer services. Its operations include managing infrastructure encompassing power generation plants that incorporate natural gas, nuclear, and solar energy sources, along with an an extensive network of water treatment facilities and artesian wells that tap into the Floridan aquifer. Operated by an independent board of directors, JEA functions as a department of the City of Jacksonville while maintaining a distinct financial and operational structure focused on reliability and cost-recovery.
