Small businesses in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood expressed concern on September 24, 2026, over a proposal to transform a 123-year-old building at the corner of Haight and Ashbury into a music hub. Owners fear the development, which would include a broadcast studio, teaching rooms, and a rooftop concert venue, could lead to their displacement. Previously, on September 18, the Seattle radio station KEXP, in partnership with a local music school and SF Heritage, announced plans to convert the 1960s Haight-Ashbury landmark into a music and culture center, detailing facilities such as a rooftop venue, broadcast capabilities, and music education programs. This followed KEXP's exploration, starting September 17, of establishing a second physical home in the historic Haight-Ashbury area, three years after the non-profit expanded its broadcast footprint to the Bay Area through the acquisition of 92.7 KREV FM.
