Smith is a candidate for the full-time coaching job, addressing the club's state after its fifth consecutive first-round playoff exit. This follows reports earlier the same day indicating Smith, who served as interim head coach, would be considered for the permanent role as Holland conducts his coaching search this month. Smith assumed the interim position on March 1 after Holland fired Jim Hiller, at which point the Kings held a 24-21-14 record and were outside the playoff picture. Under Smith, the team posted an 11-6-6 record in 23 games, securing its fifth straight Stanley Cup Playoffs berth before being swept by the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference First Round; Holland remarked that Smith "did a great job." Previously, on April 30, Kings player Kopitar was named a finalist for the Lady Byng Trophy.
