On July 2, 2026, Lotte Cinema and Megabox called off their proposed merger, which had been expected to reshape the domestic multiplex industry, with Lotte Shopping announcing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) expired on June 30. This followed more than a year of negotiations between South Korea's second and third largest cinema chains. Earlier, on July 1, 2026, Lotte Shopping revealed that discussions for the merger were halted due to valuation disputes, share ratios, and Contentree JoongAng's liquidity. The MOU was originally signed with Contentree JoongAng, Megabox's parent company, on May 8 last year.
