The proposed merger between Lotte Cinema and Megabox, South Korea's second and third largest cinema chains, collapsed after more than a year of negotiations. Lotte Shopping announced on July 2, 2026, that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with Megabox parent company Contentree JoongAng on May 8, 2025, expired on June 30, 2026, leading to the termination of the deal. The merger had been expected to significantly reshape the domestic multiplex industry. This followed Lotte Shopping's decision on July 1 to halt merger discussions due to reported valuation disputes, disagreements over share ratios, and concerns regarding Contentree JoongAng's liquidity. Earlier, on June 15, Megabox had filed for rehabilitation, casting initial doubt on the merger's prospects, despite the broader South Korean cinema industry showing signs of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
