On September 19, 2025, a Microsoft-backed team, including Lumenisity, a company acquired by Microsoft in 2022 and a spinout of the University of Southampton’s Optoelectronics Research Center, set a new benchmark for optical fiber performance. Researchers developed a hollow-core fiber that demonstrated record-low optical loss and the lowest signal delay ever recorded in fiber optics, according to findings published in Nature Photonics. This breakthrough followed years of effort.
