Researchers from Lumenisity, a company acquired by Microsoft in 2022, and the University of Southampton’s Optoelectronics Research Center developed a hollow-core fiber with record-low optical loss, as published in Nature Photonics. This team also created a cable with the lowest signal delay ever recorded in fiber optics. Another team built a hollow-core cable with the lowest signal loss ever recorded in any optical fiber. On September 1st, 2025, researchers further reduced attenuation and signal degradation in next-gen hollow core fiber broadband cables, boosting speeds by 45%. These advancements in hollow optical fiber technology promise to increase data transmission capacity over longer distances.
