Michigan State University (MSU), a state-owned public land-grant research university, is located in East Lansing, Michigan. Founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, it was the nation's first such institution. Designated a land-grant college in 1863 following the Morrill Act of 1862, MSU became coeducational in 1870. The university currently employs approximately 24,810 people.
