On March 14, 2018, President Donald Trump signed an executive order reducing the statutory functions of certain governmental entities, including the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM) and its funded broadcast media, such as the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN). This order followed an earlier announcement that the Trump administration planned to shut down Alhurra, an Arabic news network operated by MBN. ARTICLE 19 subsequently urged international support for outlets affected by the funding cuts, which included MBN, Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Liberty, Voice of America, and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting. Despite the executive order, leaders of several US-funded international networks, including MBN, instructed their organizations to continue broadcasting, believing the terminations were unlawful, and are considering legal action.
