Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Inc. (MBN), a US-based, state-owned non-profit organization founded in 2004, operates Alhurra Television and Radio Sawa. Employing approximately 520 people, MBN produces broadcast television and radio programming. Its operations are funded through a grant from the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM).
On March 14, 2025, President Trump issued an executive order that eliminated the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), resulting in the loss of funding for several international media outlets, including Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN), Voice of America (VOA), and Radio Free Asia (RFA). Radio Free Asia suspended most of its Washington-based staff on March 15, 2025, following the funding suspension. A federal judge subsequently ordered the Trump administration to halt efforts to shut down VOA, RFA, and MBN on an unspecified date in 2025. On August 30, 2025, Kari Lake, acting director of USAGM, announced 500 layoffs at VOA. Several lawsuits were filed in 2025, including Patsy Widakuswara v. Kari Lake, Michael Abramowitz v. Kari Lake, Middle East Broadcasting Networks Inc. v. USA, and Radio Free Asia v. USA.
