MikroTik is a privately owned Latvian company founded in 1996. Its primary business is providing information services, specifically developing and supplying hardware and software for internet connectivity. The company, which employs approximately 610 people, initially focused on routers and wireless ISP systems and continues to offer these products globally.
Cybersecurity researchers reported on an operation using compromised MikroTik routers in a Russian botnet to distribute malware via spam campaigns, exploiting DNS misconfigurations to bypass email security. On an unrelated note, MikroTik released a new PoE switch, the CRS418-8P-8G-2S+RM, designed to improve performance and capabilities. Separately, FastNetMon detected a record 1.5 billion packets-per-second DDoS attack, originating from hijacked IoT devices and MikroTik routers across 11,000 networks; FastNetMon recommended ISP-level filtering to prevent similar attacks. Another DDoS attack, reaching 1.5 billion packets per second, targeted a European DDoS mitigation service provider; FastNetMon mitigated this attack, which originated from hundreds of IoT devices and MikroTik routers.
