New England Public Media is a privately owned entity headquartered in the US. Founded in 2020, it operates with approximately 40 employees. The company specializes in broadcast media production and distribution.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the merger between GBH and Springfield-based New England Public Media on June 10, 2026. This consolidation forms a media outfit anticipated to reach at least 1.3 million readers, viewers, and listeners statewide weekly, with GBH President and CEO Susan Goldberg calling it a "profound milestone for public media in our state." Previously, on May 7, financial resource concerns and the goal of better serving Massachusetts were identified as key drivers for the merger; Goldberg and NEPM President Matt Abramovitz began informal discussions in late 2022 shortly after Goldberg became GBH's leader. This followed the May 4 announcement that after seven years of collaboration, GBH and New England Public Media planned to formally merge by summer 2026, aiming to create a statewide media organization reaching over 1.3 million people weekly. Earlier, on May 2, the organizations publicly announced their intention to merge to expand local journalism across the state. This initiative came after May 1 plans to combine operations were disclosed, citing decreased federal funding for local public media and an aim to create efficiencies by merging back-office operations.
