On May 11, 2026, Nomad Digital introduced Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity technology to the ScotRail Class 222 fleet. This initiative forms part of a broader refurbishment and long-term support program led by Alstom in partnership with Beacon Rail, designed to enhance onboard WiFi reliability for passengers traveling on routes connecting Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness. Previously, on May 10, Nomad Digital partnered with high-speed rail operator Italo to implement a next-generation onboard connectivity solution. This solution aims to address increasing passenger demand for fast and reliable internet throughout journeys by leveraging hybrid connectivity models that integrate cellular, trackside, and satellite technologies. Earlier in May, the program to implement LEO satellite connectivity across Scotland’s rail network was noted for its alignment with Alstom UK & Ireland’s sustainability strategy and ScotRail’s long-term delivery and environmental objectives.
