On May 11, 2026, Nomad Digital introduced Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity technology to the ScotRail Class 222 fleet. This integration forms part of a wider refurbishment and long-term support program led by Alstom in partnership with Beacon Rail, aiming to improve onboard WiFi reliability for passengers on routes linking Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness. Earlier, on May 10, Nomad Digital partnered with high-speed rail operator Italo to deliver a next-generation onboard connectivity solution. This solution utilizes hybrid connectivity models, combining cellular, trackside, and satellite technologies to provide resilient and uninterrupted internet service. This development followed Scotland's broader initiative, announced on May 8, to integrate LEO satellite technology across its rail network to offer uninterrupted internet service to trains, particularly on rural and remote routes where traditional mobile network coverage has been inadequate. As noted on May 6, this program aligns with Alstom UK & Ireland’s sustainability strategy and ScotRail’s long-term delivery and environmental goals.
