Peninsula Fiber Network, a privately owned company headquartered in the US, was founded in 2006, operates with approximately 30 employees, and reported $17.3M in revenue as of 2023. Benton Harbor City Commissioners approved a 75-year ground lease for Peninsula Fiber Network on June 15, 2026, enabling the company to begin work on a major underwater internet connection between Chicago and Jean Klock Park. The project, utilizing federal funds from the Middle Mile Infrastructure Program, includes constructing a small equipment shed on city property near the water plant. This approval followed earlier discussions on June 12, when commissioners were expected to consider the 75-year lease for the necessary space near the city's water treatment plant for the equipment shed. Earlier in the year, on February 11, Peninsula Fiber Network appointed Sam Olmsted as Vice President of Business Development.
