Peninsula Fiber Network, a privately owned company headquartered in the United States, was founded in 2006 and employs approximately 30 individuals. The company specializes in telecoms, providing transmission services across the entire Upper Peninsula, Northern Lower Peninsula, Northern Wisconsin, and into Eastern Minnesota.
Peninsula Fiber Network (PFN) began work on August 31, 2026, on a new underwater broadband connection between Chicago and Southwest Michigan, preparing a landing site on property owned by United Federal Credit Union (UFCU) in St. Joseph. The project, named "Critical Crossings," will include two underwater fiber-optic cables crossing Lake Michigan, aiming to improve internet reliability and expand broadband access in the state. UFCU Director of Property Management Sorin Mihalache confirmed on August 30 that the connection would come ashore near the credit union’s headquarters at 150 Hilltop Road and use the property. This follows an August 25 announcement that UFCU's St. Joseph headquarters would serve as one of two southwest Michigan connection points for PFN's larger "Infrastructure for Michigan Peninsulas and Critical Crossings (IMPACC) Project." Earlier, on August 13, PFN promoted Todd Proehl to Chief Information Officer (CIO). In his new role, Proehl will lead PFN’s enterprise technology strategy, including information technology, business systems, data and analytics, artificial intelligence, automation, cybersecurity governance, and digital transformation, as the company invests in technology innovation and expands its executive leadership team.
