Radio France Internationale is a privately owned entity headquartered in France. Founded in 1975, the company operates in broadcast media production and distribution, employing approximately 1300 individuals. It functions as a French news and current affairs public radio station broadcasting worldwide in French and 13 other languages. RFI's broadcasts are distributed on 156 different FM frequencies, via medium and short wave relays, on 30 different satellite signals globally, and through the internet and dedicated apps. The station also extends its reach through over 1000 partner radios worldwide, leveraging its Paris-based editorial teams and a global network of 400 correspondents to provide news bulletins and features.
On Thursday, June 11, the Israeli government blocked a special correspondent for Radio France Internationale (RFI) and Radio France from entering the West Bank via Israeli territory, an action RFI characterized as a further sign of escalating restrictions and a serious warning for press freedom. This development occurred after Israeli authorities on the same day deported a prominent French journalist, an RFI contributor, who had been refused entry upon landing at the country’s main international airport on Wednesday. Her deportation followed coverage deemed critical of Israel's policies in Gaza and the West Bank, according to her employer and the Foreign Press Association in Israel. Earlier, on May 25, RFI inaugurated its eighteenth language service, launching an Armenian-language newsroom. A team of eight journalists will produce digital-only content exclusively in Eastern Armenian, the official language of the Republic of Armenia, prioritizing social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to reach young audiences.
