Radio Nacional de Espana, also known as RNE, is a privately owned entity headquartered in Spain, operating as a subsidiary of Radiotelevision Espanola (RTVE). Founded in 1937, with approximately 560 employees, the company specializes in broadcast media production and distribution. Functioning as a public broadcasting network within the Spanish Radio and Television Corporation, RNE offers a variety of radio stations. Its programming encompasses news, social issues, culture, sports, community service, classical music, youth culture, Catalan language, and international news, serving a diverse audience, including minorities and those with social needs.
On April 28, 2026, the European Broadcasting Union expressed concern over a Spanish Senate committee of inquiry into RTVE, which is scheduled to examine the public broadcaster’s editorial practices and governance. Previously, on April 22, RTVE confirmed it would not broadcast the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, marking the first time Spain has not aired the competition since 1961. This decision followed earlier reports that Spain would not broadcast the event in protest over Israel’s continued participation. Earlier, on April 21, UTECA, an association of private television networks, filed legal action against RTVE over its advertising sales strategy for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, seeking urgent precautionary measures before the Commercial Court in Madrid amid an escalating dispute.
