News Summary:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory scientists, in collaboration with the University of Nevada Reno, disproved a long-held theory in high-temperature physics on an unspecified date by subjecting solid gold to temperatures fourteen times its typical melting point without causing it to melt. This was accomplished using ultrafast lasers and X-rays. Separately, SLAC scientists, leading an international team, successfully synthesized solid gold hydride under extreme laboratory conditions. This research contributes to the understanding of dense hydrogen and fusion processes. A separate announcement details the cofounding of a company by Andrea “Annie” Kritcher, Mike Dunne, and Jeff Lawson. Kritcher previously participated in the National Ignition Facility's successful fusion ignition experiment in December 2022. Dunne serves as an associate lab director at SLAC and a professor at Stanford University. Lawson is the founder and CEO of Twilio.
