Smilegate is a privately owned company headquartered in South Korea. Founded in 2002, the company employs approximately 1,190 individuals, with its primary focus on computer games.
On April 2, 2026, a court ruled Smilegate must pay 100 billion won in damages for violating a contract made with Lynos Asset Management during a fundraising round, determining that management performance conditions for an initial public offering (IPO) should be considered in economic substance rather than accounting form. This follows an April 1 court order for Smilegate to pay over 100 billion won in the IPO dispute, with the company confirming plans to appeal after the court rejected its claim that its listing obligation was extinguished. Earlier the same day, Smilegate announced it had prepared various April Fools' Day events across major intellectual properties, including Chaos Zero Nightmare, Lost Ark, and Epic Seven. Previously, on March 26, Smilegate's global game platform Stove revealed demo test results for its upcoming pirate survival open-world adventure, 'Windrose,' which surpassed 800,000 global cumulative players and ranked among the top popular demos at the recent Steam Next Fest.
