Southern Illinois University Carbondale celebrates Earth Month in April under the theme "Our Power Our Planet," focusing on community action, innovation, and local solutions, according to sustainability coordinator Andrew Taylor. On April 2, the university also announced that three Illinois high school students won the 2026 SIU Creative Futures art awards, an online contest sponsored by the SIU School of Art and Design, with Jaya Smith's "After the Squeeze" receiving top honors in the 2D art category. Previously, on April 1, SIU Carbondale stated it would recognize eight faculty and staff members with the 2026 Excellence Awards for superior scholarship, creative endeavors, teaching, and service. The university is also hosting concrete canoe and steel bridge competitions as part of the 2026 American Society of Civil Engineers Mid-America Symposium. Earlier the same day, SIU's American Marketing Association student chapter earned top worldwide honors at the recent AMA International Collegiate Conference in Chicago.
