Its holdings included television and radio stations across the United States, along with some cable television and national digital subchannel networks, either wholly or partially owned. Currently, it operates under the ownership of Nexstar Media Group.

Nexstar Media Group acquired Tribune Media Company in September 2019. Following the acquisition, Dana Zimmer joined Nexstar as Executive Vice President, Chief Distribution and Strategy Officer in September 2019 and was later appointed President, Distribution & Strategy in October 2021. Also in connection with the acquisition, Sean Compton joined Nexstar as Executive Vice President of WGN America (now NewsNation), WGN Radio, and Director of Content Acquisition in September 2019, and Nexstar appointed him President, Nexstar Networks in November 2020. Nexstar, founded in 1996, became the largest operator of local TV stations in the U.S. after its purchase of Tribune Media in 2019.
