The U.S. Coast Guard is a state-owned entity headquartered in the US, founded in 1790, and operates with approximately 27,900 employees as a branch of the armed forces.
A House subcommittee scheduled a hearing for April 28, 2026, to review the U.S. Coast Guard's fiscal 2027 budget request, continuing congressional scrutiny of federal maritime spending. The session will include testimony from the service's top uniformed leaders. Previously, on April 23, 2026, the "Save Willy Act" was proposed, which aims to establish a "whale desk" at the Coast Guard's San Francisco station. This desk would track whales moving through San Francisco Bay and warn vessel operators of their locations to prevent collisions. On the same day, a Unified Command, comprising the U.S. Coast Guard, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the City of Buffalo, and Buffalo Naval Park, announced the completion of phase one to stabilize two historically and culturally significant vessels, the USS Croaker and USS The Sullivans, at Buffalo Naval Park.
