Universal Music Group (UMG) recently saw musical icon Akon recall, on May 1, that the company previously passed on signing artist T-Pain due to his appearance, during a podcast marking the 20th anniversary of Akon’s debut album. Earlier on May 1, UMG reported its Q1 2026 financial performance, coinciding with earnings season for other major publicly traded music companies like Spotify. Also on May 1, reports indicated that Taylor Swift’s 2018 contract with Universal Music Group would ensure artists benefit financially from the label’s impending sale of a significant portion of its Spotify stake. This followed news from April 30, where Kirkland & Ellis advised Universal Music Group on Chord Music Partners' $500 million Series 2026-1 senior notes offering, secured by a diversified portfolio of music publishing and recorded music assets.
