Universal Music Group, also known as UMG, is publicly owned, headquartered in the Netherlands. Founded in 1934, the company employs approximately 8500 individuals. Functioning as a Dutch-American multinational music label, it operates as the largest music label globally.
On April 3, 2026, Universal Music India, led by Chairman & CEO India Devraj Sanyal, launched Real Thing Records, a new label initiative in partnership with The Coca-Cola Company’s global music team, debuting artist Akso. Also on April 3, Universal Music Group (UMG) settled a $500 million lawsuit against Believe and TuneCore, which accused the companies of "massive" infringement by distributing sped-up or remixed knockoffs of tracks by artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande, and Justin Bieber. This settlement comes as UMG remains involved in a separate legal battle with its artist Drake over his dismissed "Not Like Us" lawsuit, which is currently in appeal.
