News Summary:

On August 21, the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Class of 2030 commenced Forge Week, a nine-day basic military instruction program focusing on followership, teamwork, confidence, resilience, fitness, and service. The 494 new cadets, representing all academic colleges, form the second-largest first-year cadet class since 1965 for Virginia Tech, which stands as one of only six senior military colleges in the nation. Also on August 21, Virginia Tech adopted a vision to lead in the responsible, ethical, and human-centered use of artificial intelligence, rooting its approach in the belief that technology's value is determined by its ability to better serve humanity, aligning with its land-grant mission and "Ut Prosim (That I May Serve)" motto. Previously, on August 20, scientists from the College of Natural Resources and Environment, led by doctoral student Brogan Holcombe and co-authored by Professor Marcella Kelly and Bernardo Mesa-Cruz, published new research. This study provides insights into how ambient temperature and day length interact to influence black bear hibernation behavior, with implications for wildlife management.
