Following pressure from WBTV, records of taxpayer-funded expenses for Charlotte councilmembers were released on June 8, 2026, just hours before the council was scheduled to vote on their own pay raises. Several Charlotte councilmembers called for the immediate release of these records after WBTV informed them that the request had been filed nearly a month prior. Earlier, on May 6, discussions at the Variety FYC TV Fest included WBTV/HBO’s “Welcome to Derry,” alongside AMC’s “The Audacity” and CBS’ “Matlock,” examining various forms of drama. Previously, on May 7, North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson called on lawmakers to pass legislation to protect drivers from excessive charges, citing the impact of WBTV’s ongoing investigation into predatory towing companies. On March 28, North and South Carolina were placed under statewide burn bans until further notice due to the risk of dangerous, fast-moving fires, with officials noting the Charlotte Fire Department had responded to 25 brush fires and three structure fires that originated as brush fires over the preceding 10 days. This followed an announcement on March 7 that DISH Network customers could lose access to WBTV on March 10 at 7 p.m. ET if a renewal agreement was not reached.
