WHYY completed its acquisition of WPSU from Penn State University on October 1, 2026, extending the Philadelphia-based public media organization’s reach into central and northern Pennsylvania. The transaction preserves public television and radio service for approximately 1.5 million residents across WPSU’s coverage area, with WPSU maintaining its existing name, call letters, and local operations. This move officially separated WPSU from Penn State following a nearly two-year process and a finalized $1 asset transfer, which came amid financial challenges at the university. Previously, on September 30, 2026, WHYY was set to finalize the deal, with Penn State planning to lay off WPSU’s staff and about 70% continuing under WHYY’s management.
