BBC Northern Ireland is a state-owned media organization headquartered in the UK. Founded in 1924, it employs approximately 70 individuals and reported $23.1M in revenue as of 2023. Operating under its parent company, BBC, it functions as a tier 2 media tech buyer. The organization specializes in broadcast television and radio.
On July 9, 2026, reports emerged focusing on the BBC’s Maida Vale studios in north-west London, a site opened in 1934 that became central to British music history, notably as the home of the John Peel sessions for nearly 40 years and the main base for the BBC’s Symphony Orchestra and Singers. Earlier the same day, Director-General Matt Brittin forcefully advocated for a scaled-up BBC, proposing a new universal licence fee that streamers strongly oppose. Also on July 9, the BBC partnered with YFM Ghana to deliver live commentary of the World Cup Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Final across YFM's platforms in Ghana. This followed Brittin's announcement on June 17 of a fresh round of cuts for the broadcaster. Previously, Brittin revealed on July 9 that the BBC was in talks with Channel 4 about a possible joint streaming service, which he described as a "sovereign platform" to rival tech giants, during an appearance before the UK’s Culture Media and Sport Committee.
