News Summary:

On August 20, 2026, Borussia Mönchengladbach completed the signing of Japanese defender Ko Itakura from Dutch club Ajax on a four-year deal through to 2030. Itakura previously played 80 times for the Foals across all competitions between 2022 and 2025. This followed Leeds United's official announcement on August 19 of their signing of Swiss international defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach for €10 million, concluding his many years as a standout figure in the German side's defense. Earlier, on August 18, Mönchengladbach were reportedly close to finalizing Itakura's return, with the Japanese international expected to undergo a medical after reaching a full agreement with Ajax Amsterdam. Previously, on August 17, Elvedi was undergoing his medical at Leeds, with the Premier League move anticipated to complete shortly, and Mönchengladbach expected to receive approximately €10 million along with a 15 percent sell-on clause. This transfer progression began on August 15 when Gladbach and Leeds United agreed on the €10 million fee for Elvedi, who was on the verge of leaving the Rhineland club after a decade since 2015, with a personal contract agreement until 2029 already in place.
