News Summary:

On April 16, 2026, the Canadiens were considering claiming veteran defenseman Matt Dumba for depth after a blue-liner became available on waivers. Previously, on April 15, the team, which finished third in the Atlantic Division with a 48-24-10 record, was set to play the Tampa Bay Lightning, the division's second-place finisher, in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs; Schneider commented that the team "could go far." Earlier, on March 20, the Canadiens secured a 7-3 victory over the Islanders, a loss that further diminished the Islanders' playoff prospects in the Metropolitan Division. This followed an assessment on February 26 of an offseason trade that sent Noah Dobson to Montreal from the Islanders in exchange for Emil Heineman and two first-round picks, with a critical view suggesting the Islanders received the better end of the deal. In January, General Manager Kent Hughes stated on January 25 that the Canadiens were not inclined to acquire players in their mid-to-late 30s, viewing such individuals as unlikely to develop further with the team and prone to age-related regression.
