The Cleveland Guardians recently extended their multiyear jersey patch sponsorship agreement with Marathon, the retail brand of Marathon Petroleum Corp. and the team's Official Fuel, which first began in 2021 and saw Marathon become the Guardians' inaugural jersey patch sponsor in 2023. Previously, on September 24, the Washington Nationals signed pitcher Cade Cavalli to a four-year, $47 million extension, a type of move the Guardians are known for regarding player retention. On September 22, Gateway Economic Development Corp. revealed that its initial estimate of $8 million annually for Progressive Field repairs, made when Cleveland and Cuyahoga County approved the Guardians’ lease extension in 2021, was affected by rising costs. Earlier, on September 10, reports highlighted the significance of Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward's minority stake purchase in the team. The Guardians officially announced Ward's investment on September 9, noting he became the latest Northeast Ohio native and NFL player to acquire a minority share in the franchise.
