Dark Fibre Africa, a privately owned South African telecommunications company founded in 2007, provides connectivity and distribution services. Employing approximately 610 people, the company's headquarters are located in South Africa. Its core business involves the construction and operation of dark fiber optic networks, offering infrastructure access to various clients including businesses, residences, and public institutions nationwide.
Dark Fibre Africa (DFA) invested over ZAR 800 million to upgrade its national fibre network, improving internet speeds and capacity across its 15,000km network. This investment follows a ZAR 400 million project launched in August 2023 to enhance its underground distribution cabinet network. DFA's parent company, Community Investment Ventures Holdings (CIVH), reported a R141 million loss for the six months ending December 31. CIVH also operates Vumatel. In 2023, the Competition Tribunal blocked Vodacom's attempted purchase of a stake in both Vumatel and DFA, a decision the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition appealed. DFA and Vumatel continue to expand their fibre networks, focusing on increasing access rather than solely expanding coverage. DFA provides connectivity to mobile operators, data centres, internet service providers, and public sector institutions.
