This approval follows an announcement made more than three years prior. Separately, a trial conducted between Isando and Midrand, using Ciena's WaveRouter and WaveLogic 6 Extreme, achieved a transmission of 1.6 Tbps over a single wavelength, exceeding previous trials by more than four times. This trial utilized Dark Fibre Africa's high-capacity core network. Furthermore, Dark Fibre Africa is nearing completion of Phase 1 of a national network upgrade, a multi-year R800 million investment. Beginning in July 2025, the company started migrating existing customer services and deploying new ones on the upgraded infrastructure, starting in Gauteng with a nationwide expansion planned.
