Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, also known as DARPA, a State Owned entity headquartered in the US, was founded in 1958 and employs approximately 630 individuals. Operating within Defense and Space Manufacturing, the agency is responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the U.S. military.
On April 30, 2026, the reauthorization of several small business technology programs, including the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs, enabled the War Department to more quickly integrate cutting-edge technology for warfighters. These programs have historically supported defense innovation by allocating billions of dollars in research and development awards to American small businesses. Previously, on April 26, the Defense Sciences Office (DSO) announced it will host an in-person and virtual Proposers Day on May 14, 2026, for its Expeditionary Power- and Energy-Dense Implementations (ExPEDitions) program. This DARPA initiative aims to overcome operational energy limitations by demonstrating a new chemistry for electrically rechargeable batteries and fuel cells capable of achieving both high energy and power density.
