Operating within Defense and Space Manufacturing, the agency is responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the U.S. military.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently emphasized the need for GPS spoofing-resistant quantum clocks, stating on August 7 that optical clocks could maintain precise timing during GPS signal disruptions, which is crucial as current navigation systems rely heavily on satellite-based atomic clocks for location and network synchronization. On August 6, DARPA awarded IonQ a $28 million contract extension through its "It’s About Time" program to accelerate the production and delivery of 125 Evergreen-05 optical atomic clocks to U.S. government customers. Earlier, on August 5, Synack Red Team researcher Malcolm Stagg, whose background includes work related to DARPA, was set to present his three-year research, "Breaking Trust Boundaries: Exploiting Design Assumptions in Network Infrastructure," at Black Hat USA 2026, research which he had tested against real-world network infrastructure products. This followed aerospace propulsion company Jetoptera's announcement on August 4 that it would withdraw its "Project Pegasus" aircraft from DARPA’s Lift Challenge, a competition offering $6.5 million for heavy-lift drone development, just weeks before its live finals in Dayton, Ohio, citing reasons unrelated to the prize money.
