Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, also known as DARPA, a State Owned entity headquartered in the US, was founded in 1958 and employs approximately 630 individuals. Operating within Defense and Space Manufacturing, the agency is responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the U.S. military.
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will launch its inaugural Lift Challenge next week, a competition designed to advance heavy vertical-lift aviation by seeking a drone capable of lifting and transporting a payload four times its own weight. Earlier on July 30, a modified F-16 fighter jet, autonomously controlled by an AI agent, successfully completed flight operations under the Viper Experimentation and Next-generation Operations Model (VENOM) program, marking a significant milestone in military aviation. Also on July 30, Lockheed Martin Sikorsky announced the completion of initial ground and flight testing for its NOMAD 100 uncrewed aerial system (UAS), a project conducted in collaboration with DARPA’s Early VTOL Aircraft Demonstration (EVADE) program. This follows DARPA's July 29 announcement of a successful test flight for a fully AI-controlled F-16 fighter aircraft, specifically modified as an anonymous flight testbed. The same AI pilot software platform had previously piloted a one-of-a-kind X-62A VISTA aircraft in an aerial dogfight against an F-16 just months prior. Earlier on July 29, DARPA program manager Tabitha Dodson discussed the agency's plans for transportable nuclear power, emphasizing heat and weight as key roadblocks to achieving an energy source the size of a 'AA battery'.
