The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is an independent supervisory authority responsible for monitoring the processing of personal data by the European Union institutions and bodies. Established in 2004, the EDPS is headquartered in Belgium and employs approximately 150 staff. The organization's primary mission is to ensure that the EU institutions and bodies comply with the EU data protection rules and regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The EDPS provides guidance, advice, and recommendations on data protection issues, conducts investigations and inquiries, and issues decisions and opinions on data protection matters. The EDPS also cooperates with other data protection authorities within the EU and internationally to promote and enforce data protection standards.
