Hurricanes, a privately owned entity headquartered in New Zealand, was founded in 1996 and operates with approximately 200 employees. The company functions as a New Zealand professional men's rugby union team based in Wellington, competing in Super Rugby as part of the spectator sports industry. The Hurricanes were formed to represent the lower North Island, covering regions such as the East Coast, Hawke's Bay, Horowhenua Kapiti, Manawatū, Poverty Bay, Taranaki, Wairarapa-Bush, Wanganui, and Wellington unions. They currently play at Hnry Stadium, having previously played at the now-defunct Athletic Park.
On October 2, 2026, the Super Rugby Pacific champions, the Hurricanes, bolstered their 2027 squad with two major signings, including All Black Fehi Fineanganofo, who returns to the side after initially revealing earlier this year he was leaving for an overseas contract. This follows Fineanganofo's decision, announced on September 29, 2026, to delay his move to PREM Rugby side Newcastle Red Bulls until after the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The 24-year-old winger signed a new deal with both the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby (NZR), having previously been set to join the Red Bulls this season after signing a two-year deal back in January, a plan that became uncertain following his maiden call-up to the All Blacks squad.
