Khara, a privately owned company headquartered in Japan, operates as an independent Japanese animation studio and media company, primarily through its production arm, Studio Khara. Founded in 2006 by director and animator Hideaki Anno, it employs approximately 10 individuals and specializes in entertainment content rights. The company was established to secure creative autonomy and financial ownership over its outputs, consolidating intellectual properties by acquiring the full copyrights to the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise from Gainax in 2014 and later the Gainax trademark. Its cinematic library includes the self-financed Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy (Evangelion: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time), alongside television projects such as The Dragon Dentist and original video animations (OVAs) like the Japan Animator Expo showcase.
