Khara

Khara, a privately owned company headquartered in Japan, was founded in 2006. Operating primarily through its production arm, Studio Khara, as an independent Japanese animation studio and media company based in Suginami, Tokyo, the company has approximately 10 employees and reported $3.2M in revenue as of 2024. The company specializes in entertainment content rights and functions as an artist-driven production house created to secure total creative autonomy and financial ownership over its structural outputs. Founded by director and animator Hideaki Anno following his departure from Studio Gainax, Khara has systematically consolidated its intellectual properties, acquiring the full copyrights to the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise from Gainax in 2014 and later the Gainax trademark. Its cinematic library includes the self-financed Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy (Evangelion: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time), alongside television projects like The Dragon Dentist and original video animations (OVAs) such as the Japan Animator Expo showcase.
